GC Folks Participate in DurhamCares Pilgrimage of Pain and Hope

This May, The Gathering Church partnered with Oak Church to participate in a DurhamCares Pilgrimage of Pain and Hope. Nine GC folks spent a weekend discovering how our spiritual journeys are connected to both the Biblical story and to the place we live – Durham, NC. Inspired by the Parable of the Good Samaritan and the biblical concept of shalom, DurhamCares is a nonprofit that works towards “a city where there is peace and justice, where there is nothing missing and nothing broken – where Durham residents love their neighbors.” Their mission is to “foster collaboration, develop leaders, and educate the people of our city to care for their neighbors in holistic ways.”

During the pilgrimage, the group toured downtown Durham and Stagville, worshipped together with Mount Level Baptist Church, and learned about histories of communities including Black Wall Street and Hayti. One of the participants, Jonathan Stinson, reflected on the pilgrimage experience during worship on June 30.

You can watch Jonathan’s reflection here (beginning at 0:47).
