Without a vision, the people perish.

Without a vision, the people perish.

I have heard this common rendering of Proverbs 29:18 said a couple of times recently. It is usually meant to encourage or challenge a person or a group to get focused, to come up with a plan.

It is hard for us to resist over-laying that verse with our pragmatic, let’s-get-things-done approach to life.

The verse actually has nothing to do with planning or envisioning. It is about hearing – hearing from God.

Literally, it means something like this: Unless people hear from God, they are going to run around all over the place, with no guidance and no restraint.

This Sunday at the Gathering Church we will look at a Loud and Clear Encounter that Isaiah the prophet had with God. Isaiah 6:1-8

Do I need to say it was life-changing?

The changes we most need in our lives cannot come from us talking ourselves into them.

They only come when we hear from God.

And they come most powerfully when we encounter the awesomeness of God.

God’s over-powering greatness has the potential to change everything.

How we see ourselves.

How we understand our purpose in life.

But, how can we experience God’s awesomeness?

How do we even turn on our radar to encounter a God who is high and lifted up?

A book title from years ago, Your God Is Too Small identifies a need that most of us have.

Let’s see what happened to Isaiah when God was no longer small.

See you this Sunday.
