When in Doubt…

When in Doubt…

“…do it.” -Oliver Wendell Holmes

“…don’t.” -Benjamin Franklin

“…look intelligent.” -Garrison Keillor

“…punt.” -John Heisman

What do we do “when in doubt?”  What do we do with our doubt?  What’s your first instinct?  What are our greatest sources of doubt in our lives of faith?  What does doubt have to do with faith anyway?

This Sunday, we’ll continue our summer sermon series Free for Freedom: Removing Roadblocks to Life With God.

The more I’ve considered the relation of doubt and faith the more I’m convinced that they’re conjoined twins.  That faith needs doubt and vice versa.  We’ll look into the story of Thomas the apostle (AKA “Doubting Thomas,” wouldn’t you hate if your whole legacy was pinned to one week of anything?!) as he encounters the risen Jesus in John 20:19-29.  I’m sympathetic to Thomas’ “I’ll believe it when I see it” approach to life.  After all, how often does somebody come back from the dead?  The keys have to do with how Jesus saw and treated Thomas in his doubting and how Thomas walked away from his encounter.

So come this Sunday with your doubts.  I pray that you encounter the Risen Christ as we listen, sing, pray, and eat together.
