Woody Allen or Gladiator?

When it comes to prayer I wish I were more like Gladiator, bold and fearless.  I think I’m more like Woody Allen, neurotic, second-guessing, unsure.  I guess that even wondering about it proves the point.  Gladiator would never wonder.

So, when it is clear that God is answering a prayer of mine I get pretty pumped.

It’s a prayer that occurred to me six months ago.  It was the first morning of vacation at Lake Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire and once again I was amazed at the awesomeness of God’s creation.

Then it hit me.  My capacity to appreciate it was too small.  The pipe in my mind and heart was way too tiny for the God-volume that was trying to get in.  Plus, it was clogged with a lot of junk.  Okay, only Woody Allen would turn a wonderful vacation morning into a self-condemning introspection.

But, it wasn’t self-condemning.  It was clarifying and hopeful.  It caused a longing for a bigger pipe.  And that’s what I prayed for.

And that’s the prayer God is answering.

This Sunday we will look at one of the big pipe moments in the Bible as we conclude the series Learning God:  The Big Moments.  Found in Isaiah 6:1-8 we enter into a huge encounter with God.  Warning: it’s dangerous.

What happens when a person gets just a hint of God’s greatness?  Why is becoming ‘undone’ the best thing that can happen to us?

This Sunday.Â
