This Sunday – July 22

The most difficult part of the Bible to interpret or to read with understanding, according to scholars Gordon Fee and Douglas Stuart is the section containing the seventeen books of the Prophets in the Old Testament. Interestingly, there are more books of the Bible in this section than in any other.

Part of the difficulty comes from thinking that prophecy is mostly about predicting the future. Although these books do have predictions of the future, less than one percent of the total content has anything to do with something yet to happen.

So, what’s the point of the Prophets? Why bother? Let’s just read a few passages from Isaiah at Christmas that talk about the coming of Christ.

Here’s the deal: the Prophets tell us about the character of God.

They tell us about what is most important to God.

They tell us how to truly know and love God.

This Sunday at the Gathering Church I will continue the series, Growing Wise: A Summer Survey of the Bible by teaching from Amos 5:18-27.

Recalibration is the word that comes to mind from this passage. Always a good thing when it’s about God.
