This Sunday – January 20

“Thy kingdom come …”

I wonder how many times I prayed that when I was growing up and didn’t have a clue about what I was asking.

My assumption was that it would come later or whenever that might happen.  I assumed it referred to the end of the world or the return of Christ, or certainly something different from anything relevant to my daily life.

I had no idea that there was a now component to that prayer; that the Kingdom of God had already broken into the present.  I certainly had no idea that what Jesus talked about more than anything was the Kingdom of God.  I thought that it was a different place at a far off time.

This Sunday at the Gathering Church I begin a new message series, At Hand: Jesus’ Teaching for Living Well, a study of the Sermon on the Mount, Matthew 5-7.  To introduce it, I will give the background from Matthew 4:23-25.  When Jesus announces the gospel, the ‘good news’ is usually described as the “good news of the kingdom.”

What is life like if we live under the leadership, authority, and power of the King?  Jesus gives us a pretty clear picture of that life.   What if we were growing into that life more and more?

At Hand – this Sunday.
