“If you grow up to be a writer in Hollywood, don’t write something like that!”

“If you grow up to be a writer in Hollywood, don’t write something like that!”

When my kids were younger they had to put up with statements like that when their Dad was frustrated by a disappointing ending to a TV show or movie.

Good endings are satisfying.

But what makes a “good” ending?

Something unpredictable, perhaps with a positive surprise, or an unanticipated resolution or twist.

This week at the Gathering Church we will see an ending: the conclusion of the New Testament book of Acts (28:16-31).  Considering that the book started with Jesus and his disciples on a hill outside Jerusalem, it has a surprising ending.

Actually, it does not end.  It just stops.  Not in Jerusalem, but Rome.  None of the original disciples are there.  But the number has multiplied to thousands, living in villages, towns, and cities between the Jewish and Roman capitals.

In God’s Story we are taken to different places, with different people.  God is always on the move to extend the message and love of Jesus to others.

So, we ask the right questions.

“Where are you going, God?

“Where are you taking us?”

“How is the circle of Your Love expanding?”
