A Noisy Walk

A Noisy Walk

One of the worst jobs of my life was being a laborer on a construction site.  There were too many of us and not enough to do.  Every day was torture trying to look busy.  I remember how thrilled I was when I was asked to dig a footing ditch for the masons.  What a relief it was to have a clear and specific task.

Realizing I was not going to survive the summer under those conditions, one day I asked the master carpenter what I would need to do to get on a carpenters crew.  He suggested that I ask the site boss (appropriately named ‘Red’ – an intimidating guy) if I could work on one of the crews but not get paid any more than the laborer’s wage.  I worked up my courage all day and after work found Red and made my request.  To my amazement, he said yes and told me to show up the next day with a hammer, toll belt, and tape measure.

I was a new person.  I now clanked when I walked.  I had purpose.

This Sunday at the Gathering Church will be about the incredible purpose to which God calls us.  The passage of focus, Ephesians 4:1-16 describes God’s Construction Project, the Body of Christ, through which people get to actually experience the good things of Christ.

God gives us a role, gives normal people tools to join the project.

There are few things we get to do that last forever.

Do you clank when you walk?
